A few years ago I started buying an album or two before going on road trips. As a result, when I listen to those albums, I often can remember parts of those vacations more vividly.
I use Apple Music but otherwise what you say here applies to me too. I’ve been trying to listen to entire albums as well, to enjoy the feeling the artist amd producers intended.
Instead of giving money to Spotify, I'm a monthly contributor to our public radio stations. CPR Classical and KUVO Jazz are our soundtrack. And yes, live music is transformative. They’ll need our support to make it through the current administration and budget attacks!
Oh yes Nino! I was never educated in music but how I loved to listen to albums on my turning table and later CD player. On the bed, couch reading the texts and lyrics in the booklets. But the turning table and CD player broke down, kids and other things came and after iTunes there was Spotify. But since 2024 we have a turning table again and we love it!! Within a few months everyone in our family had one! And we started to really listen again, all of us in one house. Since last month I also have a second hand CD player - finally I can listen to the collection again. I had no idea how much I had missed it! And concerts - yes more and more since a few years! We still have Spotify for our daily travels to work, but we listen differently …
We also have a cd/dvd player again since a few months and I love rediscovering some of my old cd’s and I so enjoy the new ones that I have bought with the “spotify money”. and I also discovered that one can borrow dvd movies from the library!
Nina…you have so beautifully described my journey with music. It was my favourite thing to do too. I studied piano from age 7 and later went on to study voice. After years in local government I started giving private tuition in piano and voice and noticed that little by little I’ve stopped listening to music or playing piano myself or singing for my own enjoyment. I don’t even know what I like anymore. Thanks so much for sharing your journey and what you’re doing now to start reigniting your love of music! It has inspired me to find ways to rediscover my own love of music!
Loretta, how crazy is it that people from different sides of the planet can have such similar experiences. I hope you find that spark again soon. Here’s to many wonderful listening experiences for you in 2025!
I have a small, solar powered radio and it is great for tuning into the local university stations (KBVR and KLCC) for music. Since they are run by students you get a pretty wide range of options, which is how I have found some new and exciting musicians to listen to. I do wish they played more Jazz. For that I tune into the jazz station when I am in Portland (KMHD).
Bravo! On All Accounts! Music & Drawing are 2 of my passions since I was a kid. I played alto saxophone in band since 4th grade & loved every minute of it, from concert to marching band. I have a knack for playing by ear so anytime I could pick up a toy instrument & pick out a tune was fun. My aunt had an upright piano & I would pluck around on it but never really learned songs. Same with guitar. My son learned the bass & I learned the basics along with him but never further(he's still in college for music).
Listening to music as always been a thing. Music is the house, music at church. I'm an 80s kid, I'm always going back to that era, a long with my wife, who keeps the music alive. As the formats have changed, I regrettably got rid of my cassettes, have held on to my CDs & haven't really embraced vinyl, but I understand the appeal. Spotify is real to access it all but I do find myself still listening to albums & stuff I already own. Need to fix up my CD players & keep it flowing.
I love going to live music & especially just the local small venues. Supporting local talent. When my son was in the orchestra, is when I started picking up my pencil & sketching again during down times. It's opened up my creativity & what I want to do on all levels. Thanks for the read & God Bless_+
Thanks Nino, great reflection on this subject, I hadn't done it yet. I'm from the time when CDs were new, and that's why I listened to a lot of vinyl records. I still have a vinyl record player that I'm looking forward to getting fixed and working. Spotify doesn't really bring me as much joy as listening to a CD. It lacks the magic of the entire album release and the consumption of the physical CD itself, which was something extraordinary.

Isn’t it amazing how music can do that!? I also have some songs that bring up very vivid memories from decades ago. (Luckily mostly good memories.)

Some albums are real works of art, right!? I love it when it all tells a story, or has a specific theme.

What a wonderful idea! With a radio station you know there has been some human thought put into the playlists, which makes such a big difference.

I know!!! It’s amazing isn’t it. I find I don’t often meet people who have had similar journeys with music and art so when I do it’s special. 🎵🎨
