There’s so much to see when one goes for a walk, and I tend to notice all kinds of things. From beautiful and exciting colour combinations, to trees that bend in a peculiar way and interesting shadows shapes. When I have a friend with me, I like to point out all these things I see. Then I started asking myself why I haven’t tried drawing all these things. And that thought stayed in the back of my mind, surfacing every time I noticed something new.
One day I was in the art supply store to get a few new markers, and as I was waiting at the counter to pay, I saw these small, cellphone sized, sketchbooks. I decided to get one for my daughter, and then just added one for myself too. On our way home I realised that this would be the perfect little book for those walks. Especially in winter, when it was way too cold to sketch outside for more than a few minutes at a time. It easily fits into my pocket, so I just needed to add a pen. And that is how this little series started.
Small sketches. Made in five minutes or less. During my walks.
This vertical one is one of my favourites so far. One can see how the light changes as the days are slowly getting longer.
These tiny sketches also help me to see how the seasons change from one to the next. Something like the start of spring sometimes happen in a heart beat, where if you dare to blink you might miss it .
This is just the start of this journey. I am really looking forward to making more of these “Wandelschetsen” and sharing them with you.
